“One of the most inappropriate nicknames of all time, at least in my opinion, belonged to Ronald Reagan: “The Great Communicator,” who we’ve come to learn did a pretty shitty job of communicating the government’s problems and indiscretions. A nickname like that deserves a more righteous, honest owner—someone like BANKSY.”
“Beautiful Losers celebrates the creative spirit behind one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. In the early 1990′s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery.”
The documentary explores the history, motivations and aspirations of a generation of influential contemporary and street artists whose unified creativity was born from subcultures of the early 90′s. With their movement influencing pop culture the film also importantly compares the “intent” of the artists, from Shepherd Fairey’s global Obey brand to several of them being given $1000 a day to work be themselves in Japan.
The Beautiful Losers DVD is out later this month. If you can’t wait for the DVD then pop down to the ICA, they’ll be showing it until the 24th August.
The Carhartt Store, Neal Street, will present a selection of Shepard Fairey’s limited edition screen prints. Made avaialable for public viewing from 3rd July – 14th September 2009.
New for Spring 2009 comes the Obey New York Photo T-Shirt. These Premium tees are 100% cotton 210 gram ring spun featuring black satin neck binding. On the front is an image of Shepard Fairey’s infamous Andre the Giant. Perfect for this time of year, staple summer swagger at Urban Industry.
Obey x Martha Cooper t-shirts have dropped just in time for the warm weather! The photographer Martha Cooper is most known for her photographic documentation of the New York graffitti scene during the 70′s and 80′s. With her photography usually having an urban, street or Hip Hop angle, it is no surprise that Shephard Fairey has put his own twist on Martha’s work in this t-shirt series.
CBS covered Shepard Fairey last Sunday. After the 20 second advert the video features an in-depth interview discussing the Obama “Hope” poster, his recent arrest and the history of Obey.
Shepard Fairey, a street artist most known for the worldwide Obey Giant campaign was arrested last week on his way to DJ at an event to promote his “Supply and Demand” exhibition at The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Fairey with his Obama Hope posters may have recently gained worldwide exposure, but even more impressingly has been shown support from Obama’s own PR personnel. One display at the current exhibition includes a typed letter from “Obama” that reads, “I am privileged to be a part of your art work and proud to have your support”. Perhaps the new President will be able to waive Fairey’s two outstanding warrants which were issued for tagging and graffiti in the Boston area.
News report video and Obama Hope poster over the jump.
