David Vincent Reep, who goes by the pseudonym Elephant & Castle, put together a sublime mix for M.A.H.’s Xfm show. His ethos, “Anything emotion-based is usually my favourite kind of music” really can be heard in his selection. Having lived in Colorado, Texas, London and California, his influences are the likes of DJ Shadow, Flying Lotus and Burial. One to keep an ear out for will be his debut LP Transitions slated to be released on Plug Research in 2012.

Kahn has been seeing a fair amount of recognition after dropping a 12″ on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label last month. Part of the Bristol sound alongside names such as Gemmy, Superisk and Vessel, he makes up a valued part of the Sure Skank collective. This dance-floor focused tracklist covers quite a but of ground and showcases Kahn’s versatility within the 140 spectrum. Read more about him in Sonic Router’s interview.
Mount Kimbie are feeling generous, giving away a free digital download for you to enjoy. Baves Chords is the last release from their debut Crooks And Lovers album project released last year. Expect to hear the duo’s signature stuttered beats and well versed craftmenship that has made them so likeable. If you want it on plastic it will be released on 27 June as part of the Carbonated EP.
If this ain’t enough of a fix then Mount Kimbie are also headlining Heaven this Friday (supported by Becoming Real, CREEP and Sampha). More details over in the Mount Kimbie (Live) @ HEAVEN event.
We’ve seen a few producers get in the festive spirit by giving away a few tracks and mixes. Skream has gone one better and released a 13 track album for free! A nice mix of sounds that will keep you locked from start to finish.
Skream includes this note:
Merry Christmas….. Massive shouts to everyone who’s supported me this year in any way… This album is complied of old stuff, lost dubs and some new stuff so I hope you enjoy! Here’s to 2011! Massive shouts to Mario Cvetic for the Artwork!
We interviewed quite a few people a while back for our What Is Music? project, Tasha being one of them. More widely known to play drum and bass, we asked her to drop down the BPM for an influences mix. She rose to the challenge and sent us back this mix with tracks she’s feeling at the moment outside of her usual selection. Who remembers the last one?
The What Is Music? project’s goal is to express the notion of music at a personal level, with contributors being asked the question, “what is music?”. Talent from across London’s diverse urban music culture have contributed through featuring in interviews, recording exclusive influences mixes and also creating one off art pieces. What Is Music? was made in association with 4Talent and will continue to grow to produce an evolving collage of expression for London’s ever-changing music scene.
Jericho are a duo originally from the Forest of Dean. Dave and Sam have been working together for just over a year, combining spoken word and 2-step beats. Having recently grabbed the attention of Whistla they are debuting on L2S recordings with a 2-track digital release. Have a listen to Judas and Babel on Boomkat.
A group of animatronics designers have made peices to inhabit a one-off event in Corsica Studios. These scaringly lifelike robots have been programmed to move in perfect sync to tracks provided by the likes of Starkey, Untold and Kryptic Minds. To add to this visionary world of sound, live footage will be edited in real-time and projected around the venue.
The people at StreetFest put on another great party this bank holiday weekend. The main stage headlined by Mr Hudson but strong performances from Ty, Reeps 1 and the End of the Weak MCs really got the people going. Outside a hyped crowd gathered around a group of b-boys, also enjoying the sunshine were graffers and artists who worked throughout the day on their pieces. Back inside skaters took turns on a specially constructed half pipe, and around the way, a well stocked street market and cinema. Where else could you have spent your Sunday?
