The people at Mutate Britain are gearing up the web community with this promo video for their next exhibition One Foot in The Grove. Not a lot is been given away just yet but the list of artists involved just keeps going, including some of our favourites; Part2ism, Fark, Snub, Dr. D, Obey, Sweet Toof, Best Ever and Pure Evil.
If you missed it, check out our Mutate Britain photos from the exhibition last December.
“Beautiful Losers celebrates the creative spirit behind one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery.”
The documentary explores the history, motivations and aspirations of a generation of influential contemporary and street artists whose unified creativity was born from subcultures of the early 90’s. With their movement influencing pop culture the film also importantly compares the “intent” of the artists, from Shepherd Fairey’s global Obey brand to several of them being given $1000 a day to work be themselves in Japan.
The Beautiful Losers DVD is out later this month. If you can’t wait for the DVD then pop down to the ICA, they’ll be showing it until the 24th August.
Christian Faur uses crayons not as a medium of application but instead uses them as coloured pixels. Faur says, “My earliest memories of making art involve the use of wax crayons. I can still remember the pleasure of opening a new box of crayons: the distinct smell of the wax, the beautifully coloured tips, everything still perfect and unused”. So returning to this through his novel technique.
Last night saw the preview night of Takashi Murakami’s latest pieces at the Gagosian’s smaller London gallery on Davies Street. The space at The Gagosian held three large works – two paintings from Murakami’s Time Bokan series and one huge piece featuring many of the artist’s well known KaiKai and Kiki characters. The preview made even more special with Mr. Murakami being present in person talking with everyone, signing and even do some live body painting.
London’s show has been arranged to accompany Murakami’s major exhibition at Bilbao’s Guggenheim in Spain. It will run until 9 April so no excuse not to go down to take a look.
