Street Fest 24 May ’09 Review

Street Fest promised to be a “new breed of festival… promoting and merging creative talents”. It did exactly that by putting skaters, artists, fashion designers and a surprisingly loud sound system all under one roof, producing an aura of creativity rooted in true Hip Hop culture.
Check out the review and images we took over the jump.
Nobody had to ask where the party was, it was heard from all the way round the corner. Entering the event space, there were halfpipe skaters drawing in a crowd on the left, and Hip Hop beats being cut up on the right. Beer in hand it was time to go for a wonder.

Various stalls were selling food, art and t-shirts, round the back Fark FK and Snub23 were getting up. Just before the party really got down, room 1 was dominated by a catwalk showcasing a range of summery designs by Satoshi Date.

Various acts took to the stage including London’s Bish Bashy Bosh, whilst later on Kingpin (End Of The Weak) and Kay M (BET Freestyle Friday Champion) commanded the crowd with freestyle finesse. A great set which included the two making up lyrics on the spot about items left on the stage by the audience.

The huge white wall behind the performers saw a Secret Wars battle, with Portugal (left) taking on the UK (right). The UK artists on their home turf ended up winning 3-0, perhaps there weren’t enough Portuguese in the crowd?

All in all a great day, no hiccups, except maybe the overly eager/drunk guy taking to the stage.
A special mention for the charity, Skateistan, who occupied one of the stalls at Street Fest. These guys will be organising an event to raise awareness and money for young people in Afghanistan. Check out their website and get ready for their event, if you missed or really enjoyed Streetfest then be sure to make plans for this one!
Plus words from Bayo: “On behalf of all the contributors, promoters, staff and not least the Streetfest team, we’d like to say a big thank you to all of you that came down on Sunday to the latest instalment of Streetfest. The day was as stimulating and interactive as we’d hoped it could be. The vibes we’ve received since the event has made us even more focused on making the second instalment (August 2009) even more stimulating with a few more dynamic contributors coming on board such as Parkour (FreeRunning), even more artists and B-Boy crews to name but a few – so watch this space.”
