BBC 6 Music’s New TV Ad Copies Blu

BBC 6 Music launches ‘cutting edge’ animated ad campaign, it features an animated “street art” character with a long elephant-like snout on his hunt for music. The 40-second TV ad, created by ad agency Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R, is set to American band Vampire Weekend’s track A-Punk. RKCR’s Executive Creative Director says, “Such a cutting edge and fresh digital radio station requires something appropriately innovative to promote it, and we hope we’ve done that”. Check over the jump to see why we think RKCR have done a bad job similar to the work seen on a £50 Prada bag from Hong Kong.

“Innovative” and “cutting edge” they told us, check out this stop frame animation video by street artist Blu entitled “Muto”. With over 3,500,000 views it is easy to say what inspired such innovative work by RKCR.

Respect for blogging/flagging this; just noticed it whilst reading this week’s “Campaign” magazine (16 January 09) in ‘New Campaigns’ section p.24.

OK, We’re in a post-modern society, and it can often be hard to be 100% original but people like Damon Collins really should be transparent and admit ’sampling’ other’s work rather than claiming his agency’s new work is “Innovative”.

There’s NOTHING wrong in admitting your sample sources/homages etc.

Luc Besson successfully sued Publicis (http://tinyurl.com/89ls7v) for ‘borrowing’ his feature ‘The Fifth Element’ without permission.

Will Blu follow suit? We await with baited breath……

i have been researching this for my art project and i myself am a very big fan of blu’s work and when this ad came out it was so easy to tell that blu hadn’t made the art work but the company that did completly ripped him off by saying it was ‘innovative’ and ‘cutting edge’ which is rediculous, does anybody know if blu has made any action agaisnt these stealers???
